Summer Belly Jam
Belly Jam 7/23/10 6:30 PM
Easton, PA now has a fantastic Middle Eastern Restaurant called
Phonecia
http://www.phoeniciaonline.com/ . The food is phenomenal, the
owner, George, is a wonderful host, and the live music and belly
dancers makes Phonecia an awesome experience.
You and your guests are invited to a Belly Jam on Friday, July 23,
starting at 6:30. Phonecia will supply live musicians, and you and
your guests will have the opportunity to sample wonderful food,
BYOB, and dance with the band. I will generate a lineup of
dancers for those of you who would like to "costume up" and do a
small show. The floor will also be open for anyone who would like to
get up and dance without formal costuming.
To ensure there are sufficient guests to bring in the musicians, as
well as enough seating and wait staff, Phonecia has asked that I
generate an "interested" list. Please email me your interest and
number of guests expected. Once I have sufficient replies, I will
confirm your participation and reserve a table for your party.

Atlantic City. as part of the their weekly International Night
Series on Wednesdays in July and August. The performance is FREE and
suitable for all ages
Sponsored by the Middle East Center, University of Pennsylvania
The Habiba Dance Ensemble
Whether performing the difficult feat of balancing a water jug on
the head in the Tunisian Pot Dance, the earthy Saidi Dance of the
Egyptian peasant, the solo interpretive classic, Raqs al Sharki
(belly dance), or the Ghawazi (a dance of the Egyptian Gypsies), The
Habiba Dance Ensemble is mesmerizing. Spectacular costumes, made by
hand in Egypt and Tunisia, enhance the performance.
The Habiba Dance Ensemble was founded by Habiba in 1983. Its mission
is to preserve traditional Middle Eastern dance forms and to present
both traditional and interpretive works set to Middle Eastern Music.
It specializes in the folkloric dances of Egypt and North Africa as
well as the classical dance of Egypt, Raqs al Sharqi (belly dance)
and the Andalusian repertoire as handed down in Tunisia. The
choreographies are based on the research that Habiba has conducted
in the Middle East for over 25 years. Audiences of all ages will be
stirred by the excitement of the music and find the performances
vibrant and colorful.
Habiba
Habiba is internationally recognized as a performer, choreographer,
teacher and authority on dances of the Middle East. She has
performed extensively throughout the United States and abroad. She
has done extensive fieldwork in Egypt and Tunisia. She is an
outreach lecturer for the University Museum of Archaeology and
Anthropology and a Fellow of the Middle East Center of the
University of Pennsylvania and author of numerous articles for
national magazines. The American Academy of Middle Eastern Dance (AAMED)
inducted her into the hall of Fame in 1997 and The International
Academy of Middle Eastern Dance named her Ethnic Dancer of the Year
2001. She is on the roster of Young Audiences of Eastern
Pennsylvania and the Pennsylvania Arts in Education Roster. Habiba
places great importance in being a part of the cultural landscape in
Philadelphia and has been invited to participate in many dance
programs like Transit Dances (1995), 2000 Feet (1999) and The
Horse’s Mouth (2003.)
