will enrich your dance vocabulary. Learn a full-length
choreography with stylings from New York's pinnacle of

Dance Central New York (DCNY) is pleased to announce Staten Island’s
first Zambra dance series workshop, beginning Sunday, January 15,
2012. This four (4) week intensive workshop will introduce the
Moorish dance of southern Spain to beginner and advanced dancers
interested in learning the basic movements of the Zambra!
The Zambra, also known as the Zambra Mora is a flamenco dance
performed by the Romani people of Granada, Spain which is believed
to have evolved from earlier Moorish dances and has some
similarities to belly dancing.

Learn how to play your finger cymbals while bellydancing like a diva
in this hour-long class on three Sundays in February. (No class on
February 19th.) Gain strength, speed and precision as we do drills,
learn combos of foot patterns and zil patterns, and learn parts of a
choreography.
Walk ins are $14. Discounted prices available for 10 and 20 class
passes.
If you don't have your own pair of zils, you can borrow a pair at
the Studio. This class is open to all levels.

Born and raised in Iran, Shahrzad has been involved with Persian
dance since childhood. She studied Dance and Performance Art at the
California Institute of the Arts, and she holds a BA in Dance, as
well as an MA in Creative Arts from San Francisco State University.
Drawing upon her formal dance training and her intrinsic knowledge
of Persian aesthetics, Shahrzad is among the first Persian dance
practitioners to create a formalized dance vocabulary and structure
for Persian dance, helping to archive an art form that has been
outlawed in Iran for the past three decades. This workshop is an
introduction to the Persian style of dancing, with emphasis on
posture, position and movement of the arms and hands, and rhythmic
foot patterns.

The drum
solo is one of the most dynamic and exciting parts of any belly
dance show. It is the time for a dancer to showcase her isolations
and skill while letting go to the energy of the drums. Shahrzad will
be sharing her personal technique and secrets for this special part
of the dance. Isolations of the belly, hips & chest will be followed
by a variety of shimmies. The technique and combos will be put
together in an exciting choreography!
Shahrzad is a full time performer and teacher specializing in modern
and folkloric styles of Egyptian dance. She has made a name for
herself as a featured dancer working with famous singers and
musicians at some of the top Arabic nightclubs and concerts on the
east coast. She currently resides in Washington DC where she is one
of the main instructors at Saffron dance studio during the week and
travels to teach and perform on the weekends. Recently Shahrzad was
presented by Nourhan Sharif in New York City as one of the rising
stars of the Oriental Dance.
